Are Facebook a "Threat" or an "Enhance" person Social Link

Assalamualaikum.

As we all know, this era most of the people in this planet know the famous social media that been called "Facebook". Before I go deeper about the topic given to me, I would like to talk briefly about Facebook for those who still doesn't know this booming social media. Facebook was develop by Mark Zuckerberg in February 2004. Initially Facebook are only for  Harvard student but this social networking just keep growing  until it became a big hit in late August 2008. Now days, Facebook has more then 900 active user and still growing. To coop with this large crowd and keep the user entertain, Facebook released a lot of feature and application.

One of recently controversial feature are the Facial Recognition Features  developed by Facebook. I'm was unaware of this new features until one of my lecturer post this article : http://www.forbes.com/sites/chunkamui/2011/08/08/facebooks-privacy-issues-are-even-deeper-than-we-knew/ .

The Facial Recognition is a system that allowed the user to identified people by simply uploading picture and the Facebook will cross references in their database to find the person in the picture. Therefore all the information about the person in the picture will be revealed to others to view. This system make some people information vulnerable and unprotected by the user of the Facebook.

Most of the vulnerable person mainly woman, teenage girl and little girl due to ease of access information.  This make them a victim to raping and human trafficking. But this features are not completed yet. this is due to some bug in the feature that had need to be fixed before the featured reach it true potential. This what I find on YouTube while trying to understanding what is the facial recognition. http://youtu.be/NexhJG8C250

Would I still stay on the Facebook after knowing this?, well my answer will be YES. This is due to a lot of my friend and my families use Facebook for sharing information and connecting with new one. For me Facebook is one of my way to post my artwork and promote myself as an animator. Therefore for the time being, I will still used Facebook for communicating and sharing information.

Facebook's Privacy Issues : Photo-Tagging Feature

In this currently century, mostly everyone in over the world are now using facebook. For those who did not know what Facebook is or asking what its used for, allow me to briefly explain what it is. Actually, Facebook is a popular of mostly a world's largest social network site which was founded by an exclusive network for Harvard students named Mark Zuckerberg, with the help of his friends and students, Eduardo Saverin, Andrew McCollum, Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes in February 2004.

What's good of using the facebook is that it allows more than a 900 millions user, including you for creating your own profile page, add some new friends, exchange a text messages and also automatic notifications from the other people whenever updating in profile pages. Apart from that, we can communicate with other people from  over the world by using such features like video cams feature, liking some interest and joining groups, uploading and sharing photos and videos and many more ( etc.).  Anyway, Facebook is Free to register for all of us over the world. Even nowadays, half of the user are now updating their own status using the facebook apps on the mobile devices. For such an internet user like me, facebook is kinda what i like to say that it's a way path to connect for mostly family and friends from all around the world.

But there was a seriously issue going on in nowadays which some users have expressed concern that this type of expansion technology on the social network could encroach on their privacy rights. It's about the the privacy issue that facebook added a feature which everytime uploading some photos, it jumps automatically to this feature called Facial Recognition Features, where it detects who was in those photos. Reading from another articles that Germany investigation has found out that facebook is breaking the rule by collecting the uploaded photos without the permission on those user's photos. By doing so, we can opt-out whenever it automatically opted in the feature.

Still, this issue seems to bug me a quite bit because this features can detect someone by uploading some other person pictures, which lead to match the person on that picture with the previous one that have been set as public, that all the information stated by that person can now be view by someone else. For such technology, everyone can become spy or dectective, including the criminals by all the info which being exposed. I fear that this technology could be used on unsuspecting civilians innocent of any crime, or could be used to instantly identify someone walking down the street. From my opinion, don't get to attach with this feature and also don't expose too much information.

" Am I aware of this?"

For somehow, i did not aware of this kind of feature till i investigate the site: http://www.forbes.com/sites/chunkamui/2011/08/08/facebooks-privacy-issues-are-even-deeper-than-we-knew/ which contains article that been given by the lecturer.

" Will I stay on Facebook after knowing this? "

My answer would be yes, because as a facebook user, this is the best way for me to keep interaction with my family and friends for those who live far distance from me, and also keeps me updated about their status like activities and plans, even though i didn't like that new feature very much.

Cheers.

Privacy at Stake! Facebook Facial Recognition Features -- How far they can go?

What is Facebook?, Facebook is hugely popular social networking site that allows you to make connections, share interests, join groups, and IT'S FREE!.On the other hand- Just think, what does Facebook own that is worth the billions of dollars that investor sunk into them since the Initial Public Offering ? It's your data. sound scary right? But that's not the issue right now.

Recently Facebook added new features where it automatically know who's in the picture that your upload called Facial Recognition Features. But it only work if you're already listed as being "friends" with -- not some randomly identifying people in crowds or anything. Will Facebook stay with this current "Only Friends" rules? as i know Facebook has a long history of changing their rules, either temporarily or permanently, that i have don't really believe it will remain " Only for Friends" in the future. Will they stop giving strangers about our information?

Why they even created this features and release it to everyone?, is it people are getting very forgetful or too lazy? or maybe you are very popular that got too many friends to remember their face or name. even a machine can't detect your friend in your childhood. Let say, i was on  my class and there is someone i want to know and to make -- a friend of mine. i don't take -- picture secretly and use Facebook to stalk. that obviously a stalker job. Unless you are Secret agent from Police / Military / NSA / CIA / FBI / to detect criminal in order to bring peace to this country or a Batman, now you'll have my permission to stalk ( p.s. it's a batman joke )

From my opinion, we as a Facebook user don't get too obsessed with it, don't reveal to much about your information. You can meet in person if want to know more about whoever you want to know, One more thing, Even Though i didn't really like the new features, i still a Facebook user because it's the only way for me to keep connected to all my families, friends and also as a medium for me for showing my skills as an animator.

i want to share with u guys video that i found on Youtube about this issue

Privacy at Stake! Facebook Facial Recognition Features -- How far they can go?

Those who haven't heard of facebook, they probably been living under the rock this whole time. Facebook is, as most of the world population recognized it, the world's largest social network, with over 845 million monthly active users. Brought to us by its founder, Mark Zuckerberg in February 2004, initially as an exclusive network for Harvard students. Since then, it was a huge hit.

Facebook nowadays, is most commonly use as a way to connect with not just family and friends but with everyone from all over the world as well. It tears down boundaries everywhere. We can instantly communicate with people who have common interest with us around the world before we even know them, changing information and knowledge, sharing photos and videos, and all of this is available at our fingertips.

However, there are of course, serious privacy issues. One of them that we probably not knowing about, is its Facial Recognition Features. Facebook's facial-recognition software can sense who is in your photos and make tagging suggestions. Germany Investigation believes that Facebook has been illegally collecting face-recognition data about its members in order to populate its photo tag suggest feature. At this point, you are automatically opted into the feature, but you can opt-out.

I will admit that, at the moment, this issue concerns me just a little. It only works on people who you're already added as "friends", not just randomly identifying people in crowds, but will it keep on being like this in the future? I fear that one day, facebook users will quote, “Cool! Now I can take photos of cute girls anywhere, upload them on Facebook and it will tell me who they are!". I'm pretty sure that’s not how it works right now, but I’m sure it will get there.

Even now, some have raised issues about Facebook opening it up beyond just friends, or potentially exposing ID info in photos to others, and which possibly expose info that people originally thought was private.

My advice is, BE CAREFUL what you upload on Facebook, more importantly BE CAREFUL what you put on the INTERNET. Since there is no way to be 100% sure what Facebook or other users capable of doing to our uploaded photos eventhough our privacy settings is set according to our preferences. Most Facebook users probably don’t know that the 'extra' privacy setting is there. In short, the internet is an open sea, there will always be risks. Better safe than sorry.

Am I aware of this? YES. As I stated earlier, this issue does not concerns me that much, because I'm not the kind of Facebook user that upload thousands photos of me and my family members including embarassing photos that can destroy my reputation. What concerns me is that, I can't control OTHER people who can upload it.

Will I still stay on Facebook after knowing this? that's a YES too. Clearly I'm a Facebook user too, it is the best way to connect with my friends as well as making new ones, especially those who live in the distance. Facebook helps me to maintain my interaction with them, keeps me updated about their life-style, their activities, plans, getting to know their friends and families and that is just a taste of it.

Everybody Can be a James Bond!!

Picture from http://www.tgdaily.com/security-features/56459-facebook-rolls-out-facial-recognition-for-all
Lately, the most popular social networking website today, Facebook, has been criticized and receive many complain about their privacy status.  Since the beginning of this year, most of the Facebook's user not pleased with their privacy settings.

Public, whether friends, family or even strangers can easily access to our personal private information.  However, that issues still can be control by set our private settings to "Only Me", but the things is now, many of us still didn't know the new Facebook's feature that can't be control by us.  It is called the Facial Recognition.

Like everyone else, I'm also didn't aware about this new feature until I read an articles from this site: http://www.forbes.com/sites/chunkamui/2011/08/08/facebooks-privacy-issues-are-even-deeper-than-we-knew/ suggested by my lecturer.

Facebook's Facial Recognition system allowed users to detect anybody by only upload someone pictures, then the system will match the picture of that person with the previous pictures make public by the owner.  Thus, all the information state by the owner can be view by someone whom upload that pictures to be recognize.  With this new feature, everybody can be a detective including the criminals by all the information are public by default and being exposed.

How scary this technology can be especially to women or girls user and also corporate people.  This feature allowed criminal or stalkers to access to their victims information such as phone no. and home address.  With this information, can lead to many dangerous crime such as rape, robbery, murder, and harassment.  Its very unsafe features from what I can see from my point of view.

The question is, would you still stay on Facebook after knowing this?  For me I would say YES, because that is the only medium that I can keep in touch with my old friends from primary and secondary school as well as my previous university.  Since I'm using Facebook in 2008, I can manage to find many of my school friend that I have lost contact for a very long time.

In addition, many organization such as music, film and animation today create their Facebook's fan page or group page, I can join their page and access to any latest updates, news, information and even sharing knowledge with other group members.  Even many lecturer today suggested to created a Facebook's group page for an easy way to communicate with their students.

Therefore, it have many reason for me to not leaving Facebook although it has this scary kind of technology and also violates our personal privacy.  In my opinion, it depend on us how much information we must put in our Facebook's profile and we should be able to recognize which one is important or not.  If we take all the safety precautions then maybe the possibility of being target is low.

However, Facebook also should be more responsible and sensitive towards their client personal privacy.  Facebook in early days are good enough and still secure, not like today where everybody either in your friends list or not can read all your comment and conversations.  Facebook should do something if their still want their user to be loyal.

Thanks

ACT 114A

What Is ACT 114A?

Section 114 A, "Assumptions Fact in Publishing", a new amendment to the Evidence Act 1950. Which can be applied in criminal and civil cases, presumed that the owner, operator, host, editor, clients of a network or website, or the owner of a computer or mobile device deemed responsible to publish or review contents available on the network.

What it really mean, they "might" get a wrong guy instead of the real culprit and making less people getting into political issues

How Does This ACT 114A Affects You? Does it Really Matter? Should You be Concerned?

Yesh, Of course this new law will certainly affect me and all people who use the internet, Now i can't really contribute my opinion on political issues because of fear getting into jail or getting sue. One more thing, my family also own a WIFI, what if someone in my WIFI range hack into my connection and use internet using dummy account to post something offend to the others and my family getting blame from it. For those who use smartphone or  maybe to those guy who really into social networking gonna have a bad time if they forgot to log off their account because your friend might "accidently" use your account and do mischief, maybe they just joking but with this new law, well you might getting sue. So let's make use of "Log off" button frequently. Let's me share a picture, not mine from www.tristupe.com

There also some good in this act, we all hate cyber-crime and hardcore political activist that might begin to start flaming and hating other race "racist" start a war between races, this act will give them a good lesson. I know right now this act got more con than pro but let's hope that they review this act and making it better for everyone.

What is this ACT 114A actually?

Regarding to the assignment of Media Culture, this is the question below:

What is ACT114A?
How would ACT114A affect you?
Does it really matter?
Should you be concerned?

What Is ACT 114A?

For what I know about the ACT 114A is actually called "Presumption of fact  in publication" which is the new amendments to the Evidence of Act 1950 that has been approved in parliament on April 2012 and officially released to the whole country in  31 July 2012. Not many people did not know what is this Act 114A actually and also not aware what kind of purpose of this act. But, they will become under this act if they were an internet user such for example a person like me.

Expectation the purposes of ACT 114A :-

- To defame the person who misused the original account for the unexpected and accidental purposes

How Does This ACT 114A Affects You?

Well, apparently, this act has been affecting us...I mean EVERY ONE OF US for those using the internet, computers or mobile-phones and this act brings much worst than goods. To take example like me, as a student, which uses an internet through an electronic mobile devices such as computer, or a smartphone like tablet or Ipad, can be in high risk. This happens when someone like me updates new post on a Kopitiam thread in Lowyat Forum for example, under my account ( that been set into auto-login whenever i open in lowyat forum website ) and been borrowed by my friends which they wanted to updates theirs. But, apparently, they didn't sign out my account and that thread has been automatically posted inside the thread under my username. Due to this matter, the Kopitiam thread starter discovers the post that my friends posted and wants to sue them. But instead, they sue me as the post was under my account. Under the Act 114A, I have been banned or guilt of posting in Kopitiam thread which can be sued and somehow need to prove my innocence  So yea, it is risk after all.

Does It Really Matters?

For me, as a student, YES!! IT DOES REALLY MATTERS!!
But, the problem is that we cannot blame the person who uses our account to post because the person totally forgot to log out before he could do such thing.

Should You Be Concerned?

To me, as a student, from my point of view, I think that this act should have been revised and think twice before launching during the 1950. As from my view, this ACT 114A did not fulfill this purpose completely.

Stop Section 114A

Anyone who considers themselves as an internet user will come under the Section 114A. So, what is this Section 114A?

Section 114A is the newly introduced amendment made to Malaysia's Evidence Act 1950. It is a law that deals with harmful Internet content. It states that, owners, operators, hosts, editors, clients of a network or website, or owners of computers or portable devices, are deemed responsible for publishing or re-publishing contents available on networks, websites or on the devices involved.

Which means that anyone who is publishing seditious, defamatory or libellous content online and made it available to public can and will be swiftly hold by the law enforcement officials. The amendment is now operational since 31st July 2012.

Originally, the purpose of this amendment is to identify the individual responsible for the publication and dissemination of seditious material on the internet. However, due to the difficulties in the process of tracking and identifying the individuals involved, the amendment is now clearly assume the fault lies in the individual whose identity is used for the publication regardless of factors such as identity theft and computer hacking. Adding to that, the fault also lies in the parties providing the comments on blogs, forums and website operators even if the information is posted by others. Since most of the internet users are average users, it is an unacceptable burden to those who are wrongfully accused of publishing inappropriate content.

The internet is the place for sharing information without boundaries. It connects the whole world. Sharing information freely is one of the best way to ensures people are always supplied with accurate information. Therefore, people should use their freedom of expression does not matter in any form, including on the internet. Voice of the people must be heard. Therefore, if Section 114 is implemented, the principles of freedom of speech will be severely affected the people.

For a person who uses internet everyday and as a student, this is a very serious issue. In today’s world, “Information at Your Fingertips” is what makes the internet community alive and strong. Changing information and knowledge instantly is just the tip of the iceberg. Section 114A should be reconsidered and revised properly, it may or may not has the potential to be a good thing if it did not passed in haste and considers the public interest and participation.

ACT 114A - What it really is?

What is ACT 114A?

Act 114A, is a new amendments from the Evidence of Act 1950 named “Presumption of fact in publication” This Act has been approved by the parliament since April 2012, the government has gazette and comes into forces this enactment starting 31st July 2012.

Section 114A is an Act which is related to the dissemination of defamatory, libelous and seditious content or materials in the internet.  This involved the blog post, forum or any social network.  According to the bills of law, this act assume that any person who are the owner, administrator, host, editor or sub-editor considered responsible to be publish or re-published the publication which in the network, website or any device unless the contrary is proved.

Besides that, Section 114A also stated that:

1) A person who is registered with a network service
provider as a subscriber of a network service on which any
publication originates from is presumed to be the person who
published or re-published the publication unless the contrary
is proved.

2) Any person who has in his custody or control any
computer on which any publication originates from is
presumed to have published or re-published the content of
the publication unless the contrary is proved.

3) For the purpose of this section:
   (a) “Network service” and “network service provider”
have the meaning assigned to them in section 6
of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998
        [Act 588]; and

   (b) “Publication” means a statement or a representation,
whether in written, printed, pictorial, film, graphical,
acoustic or other form displayed on the screen of a computer.”.

How will it affects you?

Guilty Until Proven!!
Since it has been approved and forces, there are many discussion and debated about the rationality of the Act, and most of it are against this enactment.  Many activist especially the Center of Independence Journalism (CIJ), said that, Act 114A are inverse from the basic Principle of Justice which is 'Innocent until proven guilty'.

For me, it is not a major affects to my life since I'm not a hardcore internet user by blogging or joining debate related to any political or current issue forum.  I'm only used internet for research, searching for tutorials and changing knowledge.  However, I'm still doubt that this law can really protect me or fight against the cyber-crimes because, with this act, it can give chances to the cyber criminals to put the blame on other internet users by using their name, hacking their device, social network or internet network.  It is hard proving that I'm not guilty and how can we do that because we can't expect who are doing it, even if we know how can we prove that?

Does it really matter?

https://twitter.com/NajibRazak/status/235342064089452544
Everything in this world has it pros and cons, by amendment this act, it can educate people to be more careful when posting any subject or issues.  It is also can develop our people's critical thinking by making many research and really make sure that issue are truth rather than simply spread it through blog of social network by only first time reading it like what most of us are doing these day.

I'm felt really relieved when I heard that our Prime Minister, Dato' Seri Najib Tun Razak, ask the parliament to review again Act 114A.  This means our leader really sensitive with the voice of the citizen and care about our safety.

I think Section 114A is a good act, however, they should be improved in the some ways, especially on how to prove that we are innocent if we've been frame.  They should state it clearly on how they really want to operate this law without being harmful to the innocents.  With this Act, it is also can be a huge burden to the network provider such as kopitiam, mamak stall, library, education institutes or any facilities that provided Wi-Fi connection because, when their user posting any illegal content, the blame will be put at them and how they want to prove they are innocent when maybe hundreds of people come and go at their place every day?

Should you be concerned?

It’s a lie if I said that I'm not concerned at all about this act.  As a person who live in the modern IT era, not much or less my life are rely on the internet, especially as a student.  I'm really afraid that I could be frame to the crime that I didn't even know who did it, if that thing happen, it could be hard for me and my family.

Therefore, I'm really appreciated if the government can reconsidered again about this act and make improvement.  I'm not totally against it, but I just want the government to be care about the citizen's safety, as we can live in comfortability without always in fear.

Thanks.

Summarize ACT114A

Assalamualaikum and Selamat Hari Raya to everyone. Regarding our assignment(16 August 2012) under Media Culture, We need to discuss about this regarding question below:

What is ACT114A?
How would ACT114A affect you?
Does it really matter?
Should you be concerned?

So this is what I can summarize during my research about ACT114A.

Act 114A actually a re fabrication from Evidence Act 1950. This so called "protect the citizen" Act has been debated and approved in parliament on April 2012. The ACT114A officially released to the country   on 31 July 2012. From my point of view the ACT114A somehow can be a burden and yet be the only way to educated people to be more careful on what their posting on the internet.
However this act really bring more harm than good. For me as a student who were using wifi network will be at risk. This is due to if some hacker gain access to my wifi network and do some cyber crime, according to the ACT114A the one that will carry this burden will be mine due to my wifi network even the crime is not done by me.
This ACT114A for me is a burden because this act oppose and sometime accused people when the wrong doing is not done by them. Even the government say this act to protect the citizen for me is just some excuse to put people shut from freedom of speech.
As a student, this act must be concerned due to it's pro and cons. For me this act must thoroughly revised and discussed before it can be an amendment to the Evidence Act 1950. Government also must clearly specified what is actually ACT114A because a lot of citizen including me think this act is actually a burden and a trap to citizen.
